First round of school safety funding allocated to more than 250 districts, law enforcement agencies

Pennsylvania handed out $8.4 million in school safety grants Thursday.

The money, separate from the $60 million allocated during the year’s budget, will aid 269 different school or law enforcement entities with reducing violence in and around schools, whether with school resource officers, training, metal detectors or ID systems.

“Parents and students deserve to have confidence that our classrooms are safe places for children and teachers,” Gov. Tom Wolf said in a statement.

At only debate of governor's race, Trebek plays as big a role as candidates

With an election in jeopardy, Gov. Tom Wolf and former state Senator Scott Wagner stepped onto the stage Monday night in Hershey looking for political currency.

But in the much-hyped and only debate of the gubernatorial race, long time trivia host Alex Trebek more steered a conversation than moderated a debate between the two state chief executive hopefuls.


“This is not a game show tonight, this is serious stuff,” Trebek said at the event, hosted by the PA Chamber.

With session next week, pressure increases on General Assembly to act on grand jury report

Mary McHale was sexually assaulted by her priest as a teen, and her experience is one of over a thousand included in the state’s grand jury report released last month.

Speaking at a press conference this week, flanked by Attorney General Josh Shapiro, Rep. Todd Stephens (R-Montgomery) and local DAs, she took a hard stance against legislative opposition to the grand jury report.

“If you don’t support this bill, you are standing with the pedophiles,” McHale said.
