Republican and Democratic candidates are quickly lining up to fill a vacancy in Pennsylvania’s 105th House District less than a week after long-time Rep. Ron Marsico (R-Dauphin) announced he would be vacating the seat and retiring following the end of the current legislative session.

Democrat Austin Davis wins 35th House District special election

With a little over 73 percent of the vote, Austin Davis won the 35th House District special election Tuesday night.

The district, which represents many old mill towns in the Monongahela River Valley in Allegheny County, was empty after former Democratic representative Marc Gergely resigned the seat after being convicted and sentenced for his role in an illegal gambling ring.

Answering rapid fire questions on property taxes, gerrymandering and marijuana, the four Republicans vying to challenge sitting Democratic Governor Tom Wolf mostly held back from swiping directly at each other Saturday night.

Held on Carnegie Mellon University’s campus in Pittsburgh, the debate showcased a uniform platform among all four candidates — that Pennsylvania’s government is inefficient, its taxes high, its budget bloated and its regulations burdensome.

Future plans for Pittsburgh transit define 35th House District special election race

While many American political races often become referendums on issues like abortion or gun control, the campaign to fill former Representative Marc Gergely’s seat is divisive because of a different issue: bus routes.

Austin Davis, a Democrat, and Fawn Walker-Montgomery, a Republican, are facing off in the January 23 special election to replace Gergely, a Democrat, after he resigned last fall over criminal charges related to an illegal gambling ring.

The fourth and presumably final candidate to make the Pittsburgh city council District 8 special election ballot will be Republican Rennick Remley. 

 

Remley, manager of corporate relations at the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre, could not be reached immediately for comment.
