Delozier, advocates push for the passage of Marsy's Law

Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland) stood beside Sen. John Sabatina (D-Philadelphia), advocates and victims of abuse to push for the General Assembly to pass Marsy's Law.

Marsy's Law would ensure crime victims have the right to receive information about their rights, receive information about proceedings in their criminal cases as well as the ability to be present at hearings and be heard, and to also be treated with respect, fairness and dignity.

By the numbers, women are gaining in the General Assembly. They hope their issues follow.

By the numbers, women are gaining in the General Assembly. They hope their issues follow.

A banner year for women in government moved Pennsylvania up five places for female representation in state legislative bodies.

The increase was among the biggest in all 50 states. Only four states saw a bigger percent increase in their women’s caucus, while only two, including New Hampshire and its 400-plus member legislative body, elected more new women.

Altogether, the House and Senate added 14 new women, per numbers from Rutgers University’s Center for American Women and Politics.

State female politicos greeted the news with a mix of excitement for the gains and resolve, for Pennsylvania still sat in the bottom half for female representation, moving from 39th to 34th highest.

In major criminal justice reform, Pennsylvania becomes first state in nation to seal minor misdemeanors

It was a motley crew of lawmakers that gathered two years ago to first bring up the idea of a bill to give people who have committed misdemeanors or lesser crimes a fresh start after paying their dues to society.

“Two Republicans from Central Pennsylvania, two Democrats from Philadelphia — what could we possibly have in common,” Rep. Sheryl Delozier (R-Cumberland), one of those members, asked. “But we made it work.”
