Mayor Kenney announces prevailing wage bump for Philadelphia security guards

Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney (D) announced Tuesday that about 2,000 building security guards will see their minimum wage increase to $15 an hour on July 1.

The guards work for the city’s three major private universities. The increase stems from a 2016 law requiring companies and institutions that receive tax subsidies for buildings to pay the prevailing wage.

Councilmember proposes putting minimum wage increase to referendum

Philadelphia’s elected leadership and labor advocates have fully backed a raise to the minimum wage in the state. Now they have a plan to put it to a vote locally and see if the people can spur action in Harrisburg.

Councilmember Cherelle Parker (D-District 9) introduced a proposal Thursday to City Council that would make a ballot question on the future of the state’s minimum wage. It would appear on the May 21st primary.

In this week's 3 under 3 Governor Tom Wolf gave his budget address, the minimum wage increase was debated, and one legislator introduced a bill that would legalize cannabis for adults over the age of 21.
