The debate over compensating college athletes has been a growing controversy for years across the country. Now, the debate is at the doorstep of the General Assembly.

Following the signing of the Fair Pay to Play Act in California, three Democrats are seeking co-sponsorship for a version of the bill in Pennsylvania.

Legislators introduce a bill that would put adult changing tables in public buildings for people with disabilities

Rep. Dan Miller (D-Allegheny) held a press conference where he was joined by Sen. Camera Bartolotta (R-Washington), Sen. Pam Iovino (D-Allegheny) and advocates to push for adding adult changing facilities in public buildings to help people with disabilities and their families.

Bartolotta has always been a supporter of making things easier for people with special needs and their families and she spoke about the importance of this bill.

VIDEO: Four legislators created legislation that gives every PA worker paid family/medical leave

Senators Maria Collett (D-Montgomery), and Dan Laughlin (R-Erie), along with Representatives Wendi Thomas (R-Bucks) and Dan Miller (D-Allegheny), joined together to create the Family Care Act, which would establish a statewide Family and Medical Leave Insurance Program to provide paid leave for full- and part-time workers.

Funding for this program would come from a payroll deduction of 50 cents from every $100 earned by Pennsylvania workers, and a worker would receive 90 percent of up to $500 in a weekly paycheck and 50 percent of anything more than $500.

House committee OKs E-Verify requirements

Lawmakers from both parties voted Tuesday to approve bills designed to crack down on construction firms using unauthorized workers, including one that would require all of those companies to use the federal E-Verify database.

The House Labor and Industry Committee voted to approve both measures, with the more controversial of the two authored by Rep. Ryan Mackenzie (R-Lehigh). That proposal would require construction firms to use E-Verify, which allows employers to check an employee’s I-9 form against information provided to federal agencies. Those that do not could stand to use their state-issued license.
