This week around the Capitol, the House Education Committee approved bills affecting charter schools, legislation that bans abortion for babies based on a Down syndrome diagnosis passed through the House, and legislators pushed to be a leader when it comes to making changes for the state's foster care system.

It was a slow week in Harrisburg, with lawmakers returning to their districts prior to next week’s session. But just because state legislators weren’t in the Capitol doesn’t mean they weren’t busy introducing new legislation. This week there were a number of new proposals introduced as co-sponsorship memos, detailing upcoming bills in the state legislature.

VIDEO: PA Cyber Charter Schools could see closures if Sonney bill passes

The PLS Reporter joined Rep. Curt Sonney (R-Erie) and the CEO of PA Cyber Charter Schools, Bryan Hayden, to discuss House Bill 526 and what might happen it were enacted.

HB 526 would require a student or their parents to pay for the student's education in a cyber charter school if the student's school district offers a full-time cyber education program. 

If this bill passes, Hayden worries that it could result in the closure of most cyber charter schools that are located in districts where there are already cyber education programs.
