Tuesday’s House Appropriations Committee budget hearing for the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture gave lawmakers the opportunity to gauge department secretary Russell Redding on the state of Pennsylvania’s largest industry, as well as a forum to seek solutions to obstacles the department — and Pennsylvania’s farmers — are facing.

Representative wants to change food safety laws to allow outdoor dining with dogs

Currently 10 states have laws allowing food service establishments to permit dogs in outdoor dining areas: California, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Tennessee. Rep. Justin Simmons (R-Northampton) is hoping to add Pennsylvania to that list.

Simmons is circulating a cosponsor memo that would provide restaurant owners the choice to permit dogs accompanying their owners in outdoor dining areas.
