DEP secretary receives positive recommendation from Senate ERE Committee, despite pipeline controversies

Beleaguered by lawmakers and activists who vehemently oppose the Mariner East II pipeline in southeastern Pennsylvania, state Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Patrick McDonnell received a positive recommendation from the Senate Environmental Resources and Energy Committee on Wednesday, paving the way for reconfirmation in the Senate.

A bipartisan group of lawmakers had called for McDonnell’s confirmation hearing to be delayed at the end of April as they questioned the role DEP played in Mariner East’s 350-mile pipeline. The pipeline has been plagued by spills, sinkholes and the destruction of water wells, resulting in multiple criminal investigations, including those by the Pennsylvania Attorney General and the Chester County District Attorney.

Once the stuff of science fiction fantasy, more Pennsylvanians than ever are opting for electric vehicles. But the commonwealth still trails its regional neighbors in adoption of the technology and state officials are working to ensure that infrastructure is growing to support the burgeoning industry.

As part as of this push, the Department of Environmental Protection rolled out the Electric Vehicle Roadmap earlier this year, which attempts to survey the current electric vehicle landscape and chart out future barriers to its proliferation.

Fees, climate change sticking points in House Environmental Resources hearing

Fees collected by the state Department of Environmental Protection and the ongoing debate on the effects of climate change are slated to be major issues for the House Environmental Resources committee this session, if a Tuesday hearing with top DEP staff is any indication.

DEP Secretary Patrick McDonnell presented his agency’s budget overview before the committee but spent most of his time fielding questions from members related to how his program spends money gained from fees it charges for permit applications, including for companies seeking to drill in the Marcellus Shale formation.

Southeast PA lawmakers aren't backing down on pipelines, despite action on Mariner East project

Many lawmakers and conservationists breathed a sigh of relief when the Department of Environmental Protection announced last week it would halt permit review on the controversial Mariner East pipeline.

But not Rep. Danielle Friel Otten (D-Chester).

“On the heels of that announcement, I’m watching bulldozers roll into my neighborhood right now,” Friel Otten said. “As I drive through my community, they are ramping up to get started on construction throughout Chester County again.”
