Over anger of advocates, Pittsburgh city council approves UPMC hospital expansion

Much to the despair of community members, advocates and several elected officials, Pittsburgh City Council Tuesday approved by a 7-2 vote the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s request for a $2 billion dollar expansion.

Council approval came after weeks of public outcry from Pittsburgh residents who had issues with the health network’s treatment of its employees as well as the absence of a community benefits agreement, or community input in general, according to them.

Pittsburghers jam council chambers to express opposition to UPMC expansion plans

More than a hundred registered speakers took to Pittsburgh City Council chambers to voice their opinions, largely skeptical, of a $2 billion expansion of a University of Pittsburgh Medical Center hospital — catching a few members' ears in the process.

UPMC, the multi-billion dollar health care and insurance enterprise, gained council’s approval in 2012 to expand its Mercy campus in Uptown — a rundown neighborhood sandwiched between downtown Pittsburgh and Oakland.
