As Airbnb, rental sites grow rapidly in PA, lawmakers want hosts to pay their fair share

Listing your apartment, condo or house on Airbnb? Legislators are trying to ensure that you’re paying your fair share of local taxes.

At a time when more and more property owners are listing their homes on short-term rental websites like Airbnb or Vrbo, lawmakers in Harrisburg are again considering legislation requiring them to register with their municipality.

Authored by Rep. Doyle Heffley (R-Carbon), HB 787 would create a so-called registry for those listing on sites such as Airbnb, allowing local and state agencies to more easily track the listings and collect taxes which hotels and inns are required to pay.

Getting online home rentals onto tax rolls advances out of committee

A law to make AirBnb and other home sharing platforms register with local governments moved out of committee Thursday.

The bill, HB 1810, would require that the websites share information on every host in the state with both the state Department of Treasury and county treasurers’ offices.
