Wolf criticizes Trump Administration’s new food stamp rule

Gov. Tom Wolf on Monday said that a new proposed rule from the Trump Administration could have grave effects for Pennsylvanians who receive food stamps. 

The Democratic governor condemned a proposal from the US Department of Agriculture to end Broad-Based Categorical Eligibility, which makes families that qualify for certain Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits eligible for help under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), commonly known as food stamps.

Senate Dems discuss the impact on Pennsylvanian's due to the US Government shutdown

On Wednesday afternoon members of the Senate Democratic caucus joined to talk about the issue of how the United States government shutdown is affecting Pennsylvania residents. One of the biggest impacts includes residents not being able to use the SNAP program in Pennsylvania. They also discussed how their caucus is working to inform residents of what's available and what they are doing to try to help. 

Senate Democratic leader Sen. Jay Costa (D-Allegheny) discussed how there are Pennsylvania residents who are not getting paid or able to receive unemployment compensation benefits as well as other benefits and services that are being impacted.

Sponsored by Rep. Mike Tobash (R-Schuylkill), HB 1659 requires the Department of Human Services seek approval from the General Assembly before asking for a work requirement waiver for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
