DePasquale defers unemployment compensation funding audit decision until January

After receiving a number of requests from legislators to conduct a financial and performance audit of the unemployment compensation system in Pennsylvania, Auditor General Eugene DePasquale announced Wednesday that he will defer making a final decision as to whether to pursue and audit until January.

Requests from lawmakers to examine how finances have been spent in the past and the operational efficiency of Pennsylvania’s unemployment compensation call centers started almost immediately after the Department of Labor and Industry announced in November that the legislature’s failure to pass a funding extension for certain aspects of the UC system would result in nearly 600 layoffs within the department and the closure of three call centers as well as the Harrisburg overflow center.
