Local businessman makes second attempt at district 37 senate seat

On a brisk November night in 2012, D. Raja conceded defeat for the District 37 state Senate seat to Democrat Matt Smith. The vote was close and the season marked by a tense primary and even more contentious general election. In the end Raja walked away with 47 percent of the vote compared to Smith’s 53 percent. The loss was disappointing, but it wasn’t the end of Raja’s political career in the county.

Seven years, a radio show, multiple boards, and an ascension as the chairman of the Allegheny County Republican Committee later - when same seat became vacant with Guy Reschenthaler leaving for congress, Raja decided the time was right to run again.
