Former Gates Foundation higher ed director named head of Pa. public university system

Pennsylvania’s 14 state universities have a new leader as they enter a turbulent period likely to include internal restructuring and a barrage of questions about their function and role in the commonwealth. 

At a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education board meeting Monday, Dr. Daniel Greenstein was named the new chancellor of the system.

New report on state university system breaks little new ground but fires up debate

A report released Wednesday on the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) confirmed a need for reform in the system, but stopped short of prescribing explicit best practices for legislators to enact. 

The report, from the RAND Corporation — a non-profit policy think tank — was initiated through a resolution from Sen. David Argall (R-Schuylkill) that passed the chamber in April 2017.

House Republicans question PASSHE's cost for labor union contracts

The House Appropriations Committee questioned the Department of Education about why Gov. Tom Wolf proposed to give the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) an extra $15 million in his proposed budget.


The Republicans, in particular, scrutinized PASSHE’s labor union contracts.


Pedro Rivera, the secretary of Department of Education, voted in support of those contracts but would not disclose the cost.
